annoying tracks in otherwise great albums...

Postby trainwreck » Fri Mar 05, 2004 11:12 am

you know, the album is rolling good and then BAM, they toss in some artsy track to sludge up the works...
sometimes the tracks are good on their own but the context of listening ya just gotta skip it....
Flaming Lips-Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Pt2
Polyphonic Spree-A Long Day(section 10 on the album)
Son Volt-Jodel

Oh, I have four right off the bat:
Husker Du-Flip Your Wig, "The Baby Song"
The Who-Tommy "Sally Simpson" and "Welcome"
Big Star-#1 Record "The India Song"
The Beatles-The White Album "Revolution #9" (say what you will about it being oh-so-avant-and-ahead-of-its-time, but that's one of those songs you only need to listen to once every 5 years. The White Album can and should get more play than every 5 years, ergo the skip forward button on our CD players.)

The Stooges' The Stooges - "We Will Fall" You're rockin' along in proto punk glory and then this dirge halts the proceedings. The Stooges are notorious for this. I'd argue that "Dirt" does almost the same thing on Funhouse, but "Dirt" is a better song.

Now Playing: 14 Iced Bears - "Like A Dolphin"

I am down with The India Song, for that matter I am also down with Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots part 2.

I would say, one track that bugs me more than any other is "On Fire" off Phoenix's self-titled. The rest of the album is great, it picks up where Thriller left off.

'Little Acorns' off The White Stripes Elephant. 'Be like the squirrel'? WTF?

'Latin Smoke' from the Gorillaz album. God, I hate that song as much as I love that album!

I'll avoid some more classic albums in favor of some more recent ones:

The Decemberists - "Chimbley Sweep" (off of Her Majesty, The Decemberists)

Bright Eyes - "Lover I Don't Have to Love" (Lifted)

Wilco - "Radio Cure" (sorry, I know this one might cause some heat, just my opinion)

Radiohead - "We Suck Young Blood" (Hail to the Thief)

Pearl Jam - "Bugs" from Vitalogy owns this thread.

as does "Hit the Plane Down" on Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain

And "We Suck Young Blood" is my favorite song on Hail to the Thief

Just about anything where there's a "skit" beforehand, with a few exceptions like NWA's "Straight Outta Compton." They really suck when they're a part of the track contents, so you can't skip over them.

I never thought OK Computer was 100% great thanks to the lame "Fitter Happier" and a couple other tunes in the second half, which I don't know their names. Actually, "Fitter Happier" kinda works (though annoys me) but there's a really bad "rocking" tune somewhere after it that just sucks.

Tom4, I love "We Suck Young Blood!"

Except for that "otherwise great albums" bit, ha ha.
