Musical Pet Peeve : meta-lyrics

Postby Dawg » Sun May 16, 2004 10:19 pm

I hate when songwriters acknowledge in the lyrics that they are indeed singing a song or writing a song or whatever. For some weird reason, it "breaks the spell" of listening to a song for me.

I'm talking about lyrics like

"You probably think this song is about you"

or

"If you're looking for a sad song, well I ain't gonna play it" (from an otherwise great Springsteen song)

Y'all know what I'm talking about? Can you add any other lyrics as an example?[/b]

What about 'Across The Sea' by Weezer?

'I got your letter/you got my song'

Great song that breaks the 'third wall'.

what about subbacultcha?

"There is something about this song
This is a song about something there"

fabulous song...
i have no problem with the third wall being broken there...

i guess it's like when it's done in the movies... it can be done poorly, or it can be done goodly... i prefer goodly...

Then there's 'Take The Skinheads Bowling':

"There's not a line that goes here that rhymes with anything."

Merle Haggard: someone wrote my story in a song, sing a sad song for me, sing me back home, sing a family song

Sly: dance to the music- the whole lyrics are like, hey I'm the keyboard player and I'ma playin this here keyboard...

More Pixies- "this is a song about a superhero named tony, it called 'tony's theme'"

frank black: the song "bullet" : (song goes from minor to major key) "and if you don't like my melody, I'll sing it in a major key, I'll sing it so happily"

David allen coe- that perfect country song

Tina: Imma gonna do this song soft & then were a gonna do it rough

I have a peeve to pick (pet?) with bands who begin to throw in lyrics about what life is like now that they're in the record industry.

Though there are actually way more exceptions to this rule than offenders.
