Perfect Record

Postby tera dactil » Tue Jun 01, 2004 10:45 am

EVERYONE probably has an opinion about this. A disc by an artist that has no filler, no lame attempt, no "experiment gone bad", no "great except for that one tune..."

Something perfectly executed and sequenced, every track indispensable. Nominations?

Bad songs...
Harvest: There's a World and Words
VU: The Black Angel's Death Song
Revolver: Yellow Submarine, Good Day Sunshine, Got to Get You into My Life
Rubber Soul: The Word, What Goes On
Abbey Road: Octopus's Garden
London Calling: Lost in the Supermarket

Sorry to be all negative, but I can't think of any perfect albums right now. Although I suppose I could look back at this thread and see...

AH! didn't realize there was a thread already! Did word search on "perfect" and "record", "disc" - i thought the term "album" might be forever associated with vinyl and therefore might not be immediately understood by those who grew up in the digital age (I'm a dinosaur myself). we can drop this thread and just continue the other one. No point of pride with me.

Lost in the Supermarket is a great tune. Campy and fun, but in a good way.

Perfect Records:

Radiohead - The Bends (OKC isn't perfect because of "Fitter Happier" and the second half, although still great, doesn't match the first.)

Weezer - Pinkerton

The Beatles - Sgt. Peppers (I disagree with Jake about "Octopus's Garden", I love that song, my problems lie with "Come Together", "The Sun King" and "I Want You")

Jeff Buckley - Grace

That's all I can think of at the moment.[/i]

Yeah, I'm gonna be real adventurous and say Ok Computer and London Calling. Yeah, I know that's what everyone says, but its true. Those albums just blow me away from start to finish everytime.
I always thought Source Tags and Codes from Trail of Dead was a good example too. The album is just so cohesive, all the songs just kind of follow each other perfectly. Now that's what the whole concept of an album is supposed to be about.

The Clash "London Calling"
The Rolling Stones "Exile on Main Street"
R.E.M. "Automatic for the People"
Public Enemy "It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back"
The Pogues "Red Roses for Me" and "Rum, Sodomy and the Lash"
Spearhead "Home"
The Replacements "Tim" and "Please To Meet Me"
