songs that quote other song lyrics

Postby blackshoestring » Thu Dec 09, 2004 6:25 pm

stop me if we've done this one before..

Nada Surf - The Way You Wear Your Head

i want to want you
i need to need you
i'd love to love you
i want to want you
i need to need you
i'm begging to beg you

from Cheap Trick's - I Want You To Want Me
(not verbatim, but close enough ..)

A pretty obvious one: Built to Spill -- You Were Right

You were wrong when you said, "Everything's gonna be alright"

You were right when you said "A hard rain's gonna fall",

Let's not forget "Glass Onion"... does that count? Veruca Salt's latest had some song that referenced "I Want You To Want Me" as well. Side note: that VS album (Resolver) was surprisingly good. Not as good as the Gordon/Post collaboratives, but quite cool for what it was...

Oh, and U2's "God, Pt. II" had a lyrical reference to Bruce Cockburn's "Lovers In A Dangerous Time".

"You're invisible, you've got too many secrets.
Bob Dylan said that... or somethin' like that."

1) In !!! - "Me and Guiliani Down by the Schoolyard"
Here's a message to you, Rudy from The Specials' song.

2) "No Children" by the Mountain Goats, the "In my life" part is exactly the same as in The Smiths' "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now."

3) This doesn't count in the strictest sense, but I love in "Sympathy" by Sleater-Kinney where they ape the "Wooo Wooo"s from "Sympathy for the Devil."

4) Rappers be stealin' rhymes ALL THE TIME.

And speking of Veruca Salt and "Glass Onion"....

In their song "Volcano Girls" they brilliantly quote "Glass Onion" in the breakdown of that song...

"I told you ’bout the seether before
You know, the one that’s neither or nor
Well here’s another clue if you please....
The Seether’s louise"

Compare that to:

"I told you about the walrus and me-man
You know that we're as close as can be-man
Well here's another clue for you all
The walrus was Paul."

The New Pornographers have some fun with classic lyrics:

"I cried five rivers on the way here, which one will you skate away on?" from "Letter From an Occupant," plays off of Joni Mitchell's "Wish I had a river I could skate away on."

"Baby, think twice, maybe it's not all, maybe it's not alright." from "Testament in Youth in Verse" is a flip of Bob Dylan's "Don't think twice, it's alright."

Barenaked Ladies, from "Hello City":

What a good place to be.. Don't believe them,'cause they speak a different
language and it's never been happy for me.
It's Happy Hour again.

Housemartins, from "Happy Hour":

What a good place to be
Don't believe it
'Cause they speak a different language
And it's never really happened to me
{It's happy hour again}

And my absolute favorite of all time:

From the Ramones: "Gabba gabba we accept you, one of us!"

From that ancient and creepily classic movie, Freaks: "Gobble gobble we accept you, one of us!"

the jimmy eat world song "a praise chorus" is a veritable treasure trove of this stuff:

Crimson and clover
over and over
crimson and clover
over and over (<- referencing, obviously, crimson and clover)
our house in the
middle of the street (<- referencing madness' our house)
why did we ever meet? (<- referencing the promise ring's why did we ever meet?)
started my rock 'n roll fantasy (<- referencing bad company's rock n' roll fantasy)
don't don't, don't let's start (<- referencing they might be giants' don't let's start)
why did we ever part?
kick start my rock 'n rollin' heart (<- referencing motley crüe's kickstart my heart)
