Mix Tape Money-Shots

Postby Dawg » Tue May 31, 2005 9:18 am

What are they? You know, the songs you include in almost any mix, no matter the scenario. The songs you think are hidden gems that only you know? Songs you include that you figure will make the listener check the tracks and say "Who the hell is that?"

A few for me right of the top of my head:

"Animal Nitrate" by Suede

"Out There" by The Blake Babies

"Sad Tomorrow" by The Muffs

"Seen the Light" by Supergrass

What about y'all?

it's funny you should say Supergrass, because for the longest time "Moving" was my Uber Stealth Song. Right now it's a tossup between
"Cannonball" Damien Rice
"This Year" the Mountain Goats and
"Tell You Now" Le Tigre.

I used to put "Only Living Boy in New York" by Simon and Garfunkel on tons of mixes and then that dude from Garden State put it on his soundtrack. Motherfuckers always biting my ideas.

I still have the connection where I hear the kickoff to Gram and Emmy's "Brand New Heartache'" coming right after Jello's final yell in "Nazi Punks Fuck Off" from a tape from my youth.

Three that crop up with startling regularity on my mixes:

American Analog Set: "Gone to Earth" (the version off of The Fun of Watching Fireworks as opposed to Know by Heart)

Nick Lowe: "Heart of the City"

The Remains: "Don't Look Back"

Yo La Tengo doing "Emulsified" off the album Fakebook.

I actually try really hard not to repeat too often, but what can you do? I know there are other regulars for me, but I can't think what they are.

Also, a lot of my mixes are here:

If that doesn't take you right to my page, my name there is jaimoe0, as it is most places.

For me, it's usually a particular band that makes it on to every mixtape. I almost always make sure there is a Wrens song or a Grandaddy song, because most of my mixtapes are trying to get people to hear new stuff. And well, everyone needs to hear the Wrens and Grandaddy. And "Coney Island" by Death Cab for Cutie is on many of them, because it's such a great closer.

Lately, it's been Dungen and every time I've used it, the person has ended up buying the entire album. Central Matic always seems to give me a positive response.
And
I tend to incorporate a little spoken word/comedy/poetry into a lot of mix tapes. Pete & Ray (Shut Up Little Man) gets a positive response as does Ken Nordine.
