Saddest rock songs evr.

Postby Mixmaster Shecky » Mon Oct 16, 2006 4:52 pm

I've been listening to 'Against Pollution' by the Mountain Goats and it put me in a melancholy mind.

What songs really break your heart, GloNoids?

For me:

'Hurt' - Johnny Cash
'Peter Pumpkinhead' - XTC
'Big Band Stars' - John Vanderslice
'Smoke Like Ribbons' - Ugly Casanova
'Tangled Up In Blue' - Dylan
'Rock 'n Roll Suicide' - Bowie
'Ashes Of American Flags' - Wilco
Nick Drake in general
'Sunday Sun' - Beck
'Love Love Love' - Mountain Goats
'Mary' - Oingo Boingo

Twilight by Elliott Smith kills me EVRY TIME. There are so many sad sad Elliott Smith songs out there but that one just cuts to the quick.

It Makes No Difference by the Band. No question.

I was working as a bartender many many many years ago. There was a private party where a buddy of mine played a few songs for a few bucks. One of his staples was "It Makes No Difference." He started in on that song and about 10 seconds later one of the guests bursts out crying (loud, like a baby) and babbling about an ex-wife or ex-girlfriend. My buddy and I, thoughtful and caring people that we are, had many a laugh recounting the immediate effect that song had.

Ron Sexsmith can break my heart by merely trying to smile. Pretty Little Cemetary or Strawberry Blonde are two songs of his that come immediately to mind.

Drive-By Trucker's http://www.drivebytruckers.com/lyrics_gb.html#bubbaThe Living Bubba gets me every time.

"Venus Stop the Train" Wilco
"Half a World Away" REM
"I Can Tell that We Are Gonna Be Friends" White Stripes

"Puff the Magic Dragon" by Peter, Paul and Mary

A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more
And Puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.

"Caroline, No" by the Beach Boys

Who took that look away
I remember how you used to say
You'd never change, but that's not true
Oh, Caroline you... Break my heart...

Songs about the loss of innocence just get to me.

this is a good thread for a gloomy Monday!

I agree with many of the choices above.

Drive by Truckers: "Angels and Fuselage"

Wilco: "Red Eyed and Blue"

Ryan Adams: "Strawbery Wine"

That whole album should get an honourable mention here.

"'Cause Cheap Is How I Feel" - Cowboy Junkies
"Another Man's Done Gone" - Billy Bragg & Wilco
"Little Green" - Joni Mitchell
"South Tacoma Way" - Neko Case

(I was going to say anything by Leonard Cohen, but he's just too wry to be sad.)
