Happy Songs

It's that time of year when we get meloncholy, as Shecks's thread shows. And while his was theraputic for me, I now need something to pick me up. Looking out the window at work, I see grey, uninspired buildings, coated in cold rain. The skys loom with pending snow and my walks home, while colourful, remind me that winter is on its way. Hibernation, while sounding warm and cozy, loses its appeal when you live in a basement bachelor abode.

So, where to begin:

Ted Leo's "Walking to Do"
I think the upbeat mood of this song brings me up.

Jayhawks' "Baby Baby Bay"
If I recall this song correctly, it's pretty positive.

Billy Bragg's "Tears of My Tracks"
Lyrically this can be rather blue, but it still feels like a breath of fresh air; as if clearing out the "house" and facing up to the future isn't such a bad thing.

I really should learn to ski if only to embrace the snowy chill.

This is an old one, but "Going Underground" by The Jam never failed to get me out of a funk.

VU's "rock and roll" and "sweet jane" both put a big smile on my face... "rock and roll" for it's portrait of an alienated young girl's life being "saved by rock and roll", and "sweet jane" for it's denouncement of those "evil muthas that tell you everything is just dirt.". both of these songs fill me with hope...

also the full on joy of chuck berry's "no particular place to go" is irresistable.

and gimme cee lo's "the art of noise"

and if lil' stevie wonder's "superstitious" don't get yr ass movin', yr ass is broke my friend...

i am playing nothing but Pulp these days! finally got a hold on 'separations', which scares all the blues away. also, Jarvis Cocker's new (not out yet) solo-album is fantastic!

The Vaselines: Son of a Gun, Dum-Dum, and Molly's Lips (the Nirvana versions of their songs are far inferior)
The Clean: Beatnik
And pretty much the whole Have Moicy! album by Michael Hurley, Peter Stampfel and a bunch of other guys.
