The Cure vs. The Smiths

Postby Lout Jim » Sat Jan 27, 2007 9:19 am

I've wanted to ask this for quite some time. I'm curious but I don't have strong feelings either way, and in fact I can't really get into either band to the extent that most self-respecting music snobs seem to. So, please, tell me who to like! Only joking about that. By the way, is this comparing apples and oranges? Do I simply not understand because I was born in '82 and therefore don't really appreciate the distinct but equally important impact of the two bands in question?

Johnny Marr played a mean guitar.

I like The Cure much better. The Smiths are a good band, but they don't make me feel anything. Listening to The Cure in your car with the windows open on a sunny day is the definition of glory.

By the way, I don't like the goth Cure. I like the twee, heart-on-your-sleeve "High," "Pictures of You," "Just Like Heaven" type of Cure.

I don't even consider this on close, it's the Smiths all the way. Meat is Murder, The Queesn is Dead and the Smiths are all veritable classics, whereas Pornography and Disentegration are the only Cure albums that come close to that level. Also, while this probably shouldn't be considered too heavily, Morrissey has had a great solo career, and he's not even the best Smith.

Although Robert Smith did defeat Mecha Streisand...

.

I just love it...

There's an option for not being able to decide because they're both so great, but no option that you cannot decide because they both suck so bad.

Ha! That is a strongly held version of my feelings, which may summed up as "don't give a shit." Both have some songs I like, but that I wouldn't miss if they didn't exist.

if you add sonic youth, REM, and elvis costello into the mix of Cure/Smiths discussion...you could pretty much sum up my entire high school experience.

The Cure definately has a more varied catalog but I consider both bands and the others above as major touchstone experiences in my musical education as I grew up. Both are essential bands and are quite important for helping to shape the importance of music to me.

And I'd betcha there's even more songs you like that wouldn't be possible without either of 'em.
We already know that about Chris G., having posted his love for Sisters of Mercy, who, ironically, shared the same road as The Cure and only managed to get half the mileage that Robert Smith and Co. did.

I know you're thinking of a few examples...
In fact, I was trying to think of stuff along the same lines that I did like a lot, but couldn't think of anything...
I seem to remember Dino Jr doing a "Just Like Heaven" cover that I liked (better than the Cure version...)
I think that it's just stuff that doesn't correspond to my taste - as far as Brits of that period go, I was/am much more into Go4 & Mekons type stuff or Stiff's post pub rock.
