Violin Expertise Appreciated

After successfully learning the guitar/bass and then teaching myself the drums, piano, ukelele, and saxophone, I'm looking to move onto the violin. As I'm just beginning, I'm not looking to spend a ton ( > $200, preferably). But I'm still looking for some semblance of quality.

Can anyone offer advice about finding a reasonably good violin at that price? I tried looking on Craigslist, but I couldn't tell a good violin from a bad one.

Tom, have you tried websites or boards connected with university music schools? If anyone needs a deal on a good instrument, its a classical music student, and they will know what to look for. Good luck.

The best way to figure out what is a good vs. a bad violin is just to play it. Good ones sound and feel smooth to play. Bad ones sound like a cat trying to shove another cat in a blender

I can't speak to the quality because I don't know, but Musician's Friend and Guitar Center offer instrument rentals, you might want to try them. See if you stick with it, and then you can probably buy it off of them later on.

Ultimately though, you get what you pay for. A cheap violin is going to sound like one. $800-$1200 range would probably sound really good. A $100 violin is probably too good to be true.

Go with a rental place first--talk to them about what you should be looking for and get on a rent-to-own plan if you're really serious about it. Instruments from Ebay=Bad Idea Jeans.
