Stiff Little Fingers - Suspect Device

Postby Mixmaster Shecky » Fri Aug 03, 2007 2:48 am

Inflammable material is planted in my head
It's a suspect device that's left 2000 dead
Their solutions are our problems
They put up the wall
On each side time and prime us
And make sure we get fuck all
They play their games of power
They mark and cut the pack
They deal us to the bottom
But what do they put back?

Don't believe them
Don't believe them
Don't be bitten twice
You got a suss-suss-suss-suss-suss-suss-suss
Suspect device

They take away our freedom
In the name of liberty
Why don't they all just clear off
Why won't they let us be
They make us feel indebted
For saving us from hell
And then they put us through it
It's time the bastards fell

Why does this song feel even more relevant today then when it first came out?

Stiff Little Fingers...Now there's a band I haven't thought about in twenty years. As I recall, the compilation All The Best has pretty awesome and posed the question: "Why aren't these guys as big as U2?"

Yeah, I just happened across a SLF torrent and downloaded it the other day. Now it's on heavy rotation - exact same thought went through my head.

Why did they get lost in the shuffle? 'Suspect Device' should be the anthem of 21st century America.

...which is ironic as Her Majesty's forces just left Northern Ireland after nearly 40 years. But, alas, where the rest of the world is concerned, you are right.

T-minus 15 months till Bush is out of office.

Ted Leo is on the same wavelength as Shecky. He covered this in his Sharkbite Sessions EP, and plays it live. Great cover.

"Suspect Device" followed by 'Bomb.Repeat.Bomb." would make a great 1-2 punch.

Here's a live performance by Ted of the "insanely relevant" Suspect Device:

Damn - Ted rips it up! Although it cracks me up how mellow he is right after - he's like "Hey, thanks for coming! Drive safe!"

Nicely done - SLF would be proud.

Here's the lads themselves, back in another time...

Ha, love the 'too cool to dance' punks - although a couple of them start doing the pogo towards the end. Also, what's with the hippy (around 2:28)?

Clarence, I want to go back!
