Either way, America is on the way out. We're post-empire. Don't worry about it.

Yep, which is a contributing factor in me changing my mind about moving there: the economy going down the toilet, the lack of health care, the fact that book buying is declining. The UK is a better option for me.

The two party thing is the root of all evil. I don't think I understood US politics very well until I saw An Unreasonable Man. (The DVD extras are almost as long as the movie itself, but well worth the time.)

I know I'd have a hard time voting for Kang or Kodos.

Yeah, except even up here in the thawing north we have a de facto two-party system; the other parties (NDP, Green) just sit in the house making policy for which the ruling parties (Liberal, Conservative) take credit. Then there's the Bloc-heads who merely glower, making empty threats about Quebec independence.

Oh, the ancient classics. Quoting myself from page 2:

I hate to say this, but at some point the Dems are going to have to become big fucking liars like the GOP if they want to win. Bush simply repeated the same lies over and over, and no matter how often he was publicly repudiated he just went and repeated them again.

Ah, but this is exactly why we need them. Canada is a much more progressive place with the NDP and the Green Party than it could ever be without them. For example, we have universal health care because the Liberals "borrowed" the idea from the CCF (NDP). That's why it's so ironic that Michael Moore eventually abandoned Nader. In the US, the left has nowhere to go and nobody has to listen to them.

Also, when when one the the major parties screws up royally, Canadians can pulverize them (think of the Progressive Conservatives in the early 90s) because we have a few more choices on the ballot.

True. Our best governments have been minorities. I actually think we're doing pretty good right now with a minority Tory House. Seriously, Layton knows how to deal and get NDP policy discussed and passed. The wounded Liberals are fucked till the next leadership convention and turf Dion. Finance minister Flaherty is a blowhard, but he can afford to be when the dollar's so strong. Next year he'll be back to kissing corporate ass when the loonie drops (fingers crossed).

You two understand that America's knowledge of Canadians is based entirely of SCTV re-runs and Rush albums, right?
Canada is merely a place we drive through to get to Alaska and the place we buy pot seeds from.
