Sports and song

Postby jaimoe0 » Wed Jan 16, 2008 12:16 am

So the other day, our paper published a story on the enduring popularity of the movie "Slap Shot" among NHL players. We also published a little chart with a top ten list of sports movies. The usual suspects were all there. (I can post the list here if y'all wanna see it, but that's bound to start a debate.) Anyway, it got me to thinkin' about what the top sports-themed songs are. This might even be a good idea for a community mix CD, no?

I came up with:
"Strahan Has Corraled the Freaks" - Centro-Matic
"Cubs in Five" - The Mountain Goats
"Pinklon" - The Mountain Goats
"Walter Johnson" - Jonathan Richman

There's gotta be a ton out there. What do you all think?

Keeping with hockey, I've always been a big fan of the Chixdiggit song (I Feel Like) Gerry Cheevers (Stitch Marks On My Heart).

Donovan Woods' My Cousin Has a Grey Cup Ring is somewhat timely with the super bowl approaching...CBC has a sample of it here (4th track down) - http://radio3.cbc.ca/bands/Donovan-Woods/

"Piazza, New York Catcher" by Belle and Sebastien
"The Sporting Life," by The Decemberists
"Official," by Pharoahe Monch

Does "Real American," by Rick Derringer, the Hulk Hogan theme song, count? Every time that song starts I want to tear my shirt off.

"Higher and Higher," by Theodore Shapiro and Craig Wedren (as heard in Wet Hot American Summer)

Here's an obvious one: John Fogerty's "Centerfield."

"Ballad of Wendell Clark" by the Rheostatics
"The Hockey Song" by Stompin' Tom
"Eton Rifles" by the Jam
"You're In My Heart" by Rod Stewart
"You'll Never Walk Alone" by Gerry and the Pacemakers, which was adopted by Liverpool supporters rather than written specifically about sport.

Then there's this: Come On England

Help me understand what Rundgren's "Bang The Drum All Day" has anything to do with sports...or Fridays for that matter.
