Xbox vs. PS3 vs. Wii

Postby Jake » Mon Jun 30, 2008 10:57 am

Okay, I know there are a lot of nerds around here. So... I'm going to get a game system. Basically so I can play Rock Band. Which system should I get?

One thing to consider: I do not watch movies so Bluray DVDs are not much of a plus for me.

Also: I am not really into videogames.

And: I do not currently own an HD TV (but will probably be getting one eventually).

Jake, you sound like a text book "casual gamer". I'd grab the Wii. It's perfect for short bursts of gaming when the time allows, baby naps, and being able to download old NES games is dope as hell.

Has anyone played Rock Band on the Wii? Is it the same as on Xbox?

My wife wants a Wii. She tells ME it's so we can get Rock Band. But I know it's because she wants the Wii Fit.

I gave up on gaming 6 years ago. I couldn't keep up with all shit that just kept coming out. I was spending way too much time sitting in front of the screen wasting my time and not getting any sleep. I can only have one "hobby" and gaming lost.

all we really need is one of these:

I just read that the Wii version of Rock Band is similar to the PS2 version wherein you cannot download new songs and do other interactive stuff. Looks like I'm back to deciding between the Xbox and the PS3.

From a gamer's perspective, I say 360. The Wii is fun but the game selection is very anemic compared to the 360.

Put another way: when my consoles were stolen a few weeks ago, I replaced the 360 as soon as I could. The Wii will wait until I can actually find one at retail, and then I'll be getting it only for Wii Fit.

I haven't played a PS3 yet (gasp), but while it is very cool and has some good sounding games, so far the consensus seems to be the developers are underdelivering on the platform, and it still needs a solid array of "AAA titles."

And finally, there's the imminent price drop on the 360 to $299. That should help, too.

Do you know approx. when that's happening? I should hold off, huh?

Leaked Radio Shack and K-Mart ads show July 13 - the E3 expo is July 14-17, so that makes sense.

I should have said that your "not a gamer" philosophy does favor the Wii; it's more casual fun, and I think the Virtual Console game choices are as good as the Live Arcade choices on the Xbox, in a more old-school, NES-kind-of-way. It's also not as intrusive a piece of hardware.

I think your Rock Band experience will be much better on the 360, though. If that's the #1 concern, it's a pretty easy choice.

Word, that's how I'm leaning!
