This I can't imagine. NO records from '07 or '08?

1990 was a weird node of suck. I guess it was a year lost in the chasm between the excessive 80's and the miserable 90's. There were some acclaimed records released in 1990 - Violator, Fear of a Black Planet, Ritual de lo Habitual, Goo, Ragged Glory, Bellybutton... but other than Public Enemy nothing particularly 'sticky'.

Not a single new release in two years. Normally I would have picked up Sky Blue Sky, but I found it so boring that I passed...I guess age, kids, travel and self-employment do odd things to purchasing patterns. Been mostly picking up old stuff (Dylan, Beatles, Neil Young, Bill Withers, etc.)

I plan on picking up the new Silver Jews and that will be the first new release I've bought since I got Fox Confessor Brings the Flood and Post-War in 2006.

hmmm.... well here's a short list of some of the great albums that came out in 1990:

they might be giants - flood
pixies - bossanova
the sundays - reading, writing, and arithmetic
aztec camera - stray
the cure - never enough
edie brickell and new bohemians - ghost of a dog
cocteau twins - heaven or las vegas
10,000 maniacs - hope chest
jane's addiction - ritual de lo habitual
poi dog pondering - wishing like the mountain and thinking like the sea

many of these are my favorite cd's of all time. 1990 is probably my personal favorite year musically.

Come on! Fear of a Black Planet is one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever. No to push my tastes on others, but when it comes to PE, I'm steadfast in my assertion that even if there's nothing that grabs you, this is one album that you have to at least concede is worthy of a spot on your list. Also, great call by MF on American Water in '98. I love In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, but I would probably opt for AW-it is criminally underrated. Some other addendum to my list: No Don Cab in '95. Great album, but not worthy of the other three. Also no LCD Soundsystem in '05.

A final note: 2001 is by far the weakest year. I chose those two since nothing just jumped out and said "Best album of 2001." I love Amnesiac and Blueprint, but they are my two least favorite abums of the 30 I chose.

2001 was tough for me too. I really liked that Reindeer Section album, but it's probably one of the weaker entries on my list...

Still compiling my list in my downtime at work. It sucks to be old. It's taking me way too long. But I'm committed to picking one great album from every year of my life... even 2001.

I'm not done compiling mine yet. I'm being obsessive about it. Go figure. I'm also really old.
