I think unknown indie rock rarely does that. And even when a new song stands out, the brand never (for me anyway) sticks. Maybe there's some subconscious thing going on in my head that considers Acura (or whatever) hip or something because I heard a cool new song in their ad... But I doubt it.
I love the Kings of Convenience song "Toxic Girl" that was used in some ad with kids on a bus a few years ago, but I have absolutely no idea what it was advertising.
I know that "Pink Moon" was VW, and I first heard Badly Drawn Boy in a Gap ad, so maybe I'm full of shit. But those are the exceptions.
There have been a ton of times I've googled songs from ads, downloaded them, and then IMMEDIATELY forgot who the advertiser was. "I Adore You" by some unknown myspacer might be the latest example of that. Great song, no idea what the ad was anymore. Shit, I can't even remember the artist's name -- I'd have to look it up in my iTunes...
