I have a client, and... a woman I'll simple call 'a close relative of BJ,' works at their office.
She once mentioned having some evening plans with him. She didn't say "Bill Joel" by name, only referenced him by relation but everybody knows the relationship. The way she said it I'm pretty sure she was baiting to see if anyone would ask about him, but nobody humored her. I was tempted to say, "well just don't let him drive," but I bit my tongue. She's alright. And I've really got no problem with Mr. Joel either. I'm not a big fan, he's not really my thing, but there are a Lot of other people I'd put in line way ahead of BJ when it comes to annoying pop-musicians.
I like his attitude towards his detractors:
The Entertainer wrote:I am the Entertainer,
And I've had to pay my price.
The things I did not know at first,
I learned by doin' twice.
But still they come to haunt me,
Still they want their say.
So I've learned to dance
With a hand in my pants,
And they rub on my neck,
And I write 'em a check,
And they go their merry way.
He does whatever the fuck he wants. And if it crosses someone and they sue -- "Yeah? Jerk me off. Here's some 'fuck-off money'." -- and he gets on with his life.
And today he's about a zillion times richer than he was 30+ years ago when he wrote that song.
Yeah, I respect Bill Joel.
