John Lydon once said that U2 was "pub rock on a grand scale." That's a perfect description (especially coming from His Rottenness) of what made early U2 something special.

Whenever my wife wants to get under my skin, she does that Bono thing from the Rattle and Hum movie. "Am I buggin' you? Don't mean to bug ya." For me, that line will forever be a reminder of when U2 jumped the shark.

OK Edge, play the blues. Right.

I don't care how many arenas and stadia they sell out. If they're doing academic conferences about you, your career is officially over. The band's problem, and it's been a big problem for at least a decade, is that the songs aren't anywhere near catchy enough to overcome their completely irritating singer.

Yeah, but Neil McCormick's book Killing Bono was pretty fun.
