I'd just like to put together a really good compilation.

Seriously, even a single-disc "Complete BBC Sessions" disc would be awesome. 22-24 songs (depending on whether or not you include the live "Hand in Glove" and the hybrid "How Soon Is Now"), it would be pretty awesome.

May 31 1983 - John Peel Show (UK, BBC Radio One) Recorded on 18 May 1983
1. Handsome Devil - HOH
2. Reel Around The Fountain - HOH
3. Miserable Lie - Peel Sessions
4. What Difference Does It Make? - HOH, SOS

July 4 1983 - David Jensen Show (UK, BBC Radio One)
5. These Things Take Time - HOH
6. You've Got Everything Now - HOH
7. Wonderful Woman
8. Hand in Glove (live 29 June 1983) - SOS iTunes

September 1983 - David Jensen Show (UK, BBC Radio One) - Recorded 25 August 1983.
9. Accept Yourself - HOH
10. I Don't Owe You Anything
11. Pretty Girls Make Graves
12. Reel Around The Fountain - wasn't broadcast until two years later

September 21 1983 - John Peel Show (UK, BBC Radio One) - Recorded 14 September 1983.
13. This Charming Man - HOH
14. Back To The Old House - HOH
15. This Night Has Opened My Eyes - HOH, LTB
16. Still Ill - HOH

9 August 1984 - John Peel Show (UK, BBC Radio One)
17. William, It Was Really Nothing
18. Nowhere Fast
19. Rusholme Ruffians
20. How Soon Is Now? - built mostly of samples from the original version. Only bass and one or two guitars seem to have been recorded for the session.

December 17 1986 - John Peel Show (UK, BBC Radio One) - Recorded 2 December 1986.
21. Is It Really So Strange? - LTB
22. London
23. Half A Person
24. Sweet And Tender Hooligan - LTB, SOS

Hmmm. A BBC Sessions comp WOULD be pretty rad. That's a definate Fan Boy extreme wish. And something I really hadn't ever thought of. Probably cause I used to own all it anyway.

My question is, how far can you go without going off the deep end like you have? I think that all you really need is:

The Peel Sessions
The Smiths
The Queen is Dead
Meat is Murder
Strangeways Here We Come
Louder than Bombs.

I think you cross the line into nut-job when (on top of the list above) you own more than 6 singles, or you own Hatful of Hollow AND The World Won't Listen, or you buy anything on colored vinyl.

I'll give anybody a pass, though on Rank. In my opinion Rank is one of the worst live concert albums EVER. The mix is horrible. I've heard bootlegs made with cell phones that sound better than that. It sounds like somebody just put a microphone up to one of the monitors and recorded the whole thing on a cassette tape.

Well, 9 of those BBC versions already appear on Hatful. The Peel Sessions EP you mention only had 4 songs, 3 of them previously released on Hatful. I think Hatful is essential (right now) because those radio sessions are the definitive versions of a lot of those songs that were re-recorded for The Smiths.

The World Won't Listen is by all means the least essential of the three comps released while the band was still active. It only contains four versions of songs that aren't available on Louder Than Bombs, and of those, only "Stretch Out and Wait" is significant (different lyrics). The other three, as far as I can tell, are just slightly different mixes.

But Hatful is totally essential. I'd tell newbies to pick that up before The Smiths for sure.

Hmmm....

all things i haven't thought about in a long time.

Now that you bring it up, I have to agree that the pre The Smiths versions of those songs have a certain rawness to them that is toned down a little by the time The Smiths was released.

You're winning me over, Jake.

I think the best stance on Hatful is to say it should be shitcanned. Take all the comps and throw them out, then reorganize everything. Issue a new BBC comp, and reorganize everthing NOT on one of the official LPs into a new, post The Smiths comp.
