Song of Satan
Posted: Wed Mar 02, 2011 7:27 pm
I've been contemplating a compilation of "great" rock songs in which Satan makes a significant appearance as a character. Other than any number of Black Sabbath/Ozzy songs, here's where I'm at.
-Sympathy For the Devil (The Rolling Stones)
-Driving South (The Stone Roses)
-Red Misquito (Pearl Jam)
-Hell In Chrome (Wilco)
-When You Were Young (The Killers)
-The Devil Went Down to Georgia (Charlie Daniels Band)
Give me a hand, would ya?

Devil in My Car (B-52s)
I'll add more when I get home and look at the iTunes library. Seems like this should be a rich vein to mine.
Me and the Devil Blues (Robert Johnson)
Angel Is the Devil (Steve Earle)
Christine's Tune (Devil in Disguise) (The Flying Burrito Brothers)

"We Love You" by Camper Van Beethoven is one of my favorites.
"Well we went down to Georgia, we were looking for some fun
Instead we met the devil with a fiddle and a gun
And he said 'I'm the baddest fiddler anywhere in the land'
And when he proved it to us, well, we let him join the band

Gene Vincent - "Race with the Devil"
Van Halen - "Runnin' with the Devil"
Frank Proffitt/Uncle Tupelo - "Satan Your Kingdom Must Come Down"

Beck's "Satan Gave Me a Taco" sprang to mind then I drew a blank.
After that I ran a search for "Devil" in my library and got a ton of stuff, but I'm unsure of how many are literally about Old Scratch. For example, I'm not counting "Devil With the Blue Dress", or "Devil's Haircut".
The Rev. Horton Heat - "The Devil's Chasing Me"
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds "Up Jumped the Devil"
Gene Vincent "Race With the Devil" (I also have a live version of this one by The Fall)
Skip James "Devil Got my Woman"
Van Halen "Running with the Devil"
George Jones "Take the Devil Out of Me" (I know you said Rock&Roll but, you got Charlie Daniels and this is more of an early No Show rockabilly cut)
Eagles of Death Metal "Kiss the Devil"

'The Devils Coachman' by Robyn Hitchcock is another fave.
"Yesterday I saw the Devil in my food
I wasn't hungry, but I played with it
Blood red horns gouged through my scrambled (egg)
Yesterday I saw the Devil in my heart
I was expecting him, the doctor came
I have to call the doctor every time we kiss"

Good topic! Off the top of my head:
AC/DC - "Hell's Bells" / "Highway to Hell"
Tom Waits - "Black Rider"
CCR - "Run Through the Jungle"
Then here's a couple that reference ye olde Devil but aren't necessarily starring him:
Gram Parsons (Flying Burrito Brothers) - "Sin City"
The Band - "The Weight"
Tom Waits - "Way Down in the Hole"
I'm blanking but I feel like there's got to be a lot from those dudes like Nick Cave. You know what I mean: Dylan, Tom Waits, Cohen, Johnny Cash... Those guys are all "Devil this" and "Satan that" and "Look out!" and "Oh boy" and "Dag Nabbit!". You know the type.
