Cover songs better than the original

Who says I'm all talk and no action?

As mentioned in another thread, a similar post on reddit yielded some pretty god-awful responses to this question. So, in order to bring this topic to a group of people who have opinions that actually count, and to do my part to get this board moving again, let's make a list. And Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt" doesn't count because that's always the obvious answer.

And one other note that the redditors didn't seem to appreciate: Cover songs that are better than the original, not just "good cover songs."

To get it started:
Otis Redding, "Respect"
Gary Jules, "Mad World"
Oasis, "Cum on Feel the Noize" (observe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCUUuAZobSk&feature=fvst)
Robyn, "Cobrastyle"
Twilight Singers, "Live With Me"

That's just off the top of my head. What else?

(Subquestion. Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah." Better than the original or no? And if you bring up John Cale's version, fuck you in advance.)

This one's arguable, I know, but Devo's cover of 'Satisfaction' always seems to be superior to the Stone's. Partly because they twist it so far away from the original's intent.

Your wife? Oh burn!

I really loved this the first 200 times I heard it. But at some point I just became sick of it.

Thanks!

If I dare suggest that both the Uncle Tupelo and Sonic Youth covers of "I Wanna Be Your Dog" are superior, is that some kind of heresy? Probably, but I'm sayin' it.

Agreed! And I still quite love Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah." With absolutely no irony, however, I think Mike Patton's cover (live only?) of Herb Alpert's "This Guy's in Love with You" is splendid. Oh, and The Tourists' version of "I Only Want to Be with You."

Nirvana - Molly's Lips (although I do love the Vaselines' original as well)
Beastie Boys - Time for Living (Sly's original is kinda boring)
Elvis Presley - Tomorrow is a Long Time (Dylan's original is good, but apparently Elvis only heard Odetta's version)

I guess it's been back a while, but welcome back, GloNo!

Anyway, I was just listening to Long Player by the Faces. I'd say their cover of Maybe I'm Amazed is better than McCartney's.

Not a huge fan of Rollins Band (at all) but his cover of Pink Fairies Do It pretty much rules.

Controversial, but Siouxsie & the Banshees cover of Dear Prudence is my favorite version of one of my favorite songs. (That said, Beatles' version is great, obvs.)

The Fall's cover of Mr. Pharmacist > The Other Half (And the Fall's cover of Victoria is also great. I think I like it more than the original, but I'm not 100 percent sure on that one.)

Spacemen 3's Transparent Radiation > Red Krayola

Agree that Devo's Satisfaction wins. Disagree that Nirvana's Molly's Lips is better than the Vaselines' version. (Though Nirvana's cover is great!)
