My earliest musical memories

Made a playlist (on Spotify this time, MOG haters!) of songs from around 1973 to 76 that I associate with my early childhood:

http://open.spotify.com/user/gloriousno ... TlKzromiDH

It's strange to think that my kid, who's 5 now, is the age I was when I was listening to this stuff.

It's also a little disturbing to see how many of these songs are totally melancholy, sad sack, downers.

What came first – the music or the misery? Did I listen to the music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to the music? Do all those records turn you into a melancholy person?

People worry about kids playing with guns, and teenagers watchng violent videos; we are scared that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands - literally thousands - of songs about broken hearts and rejection and pain and misery and loss. The unhappiest people I know, romantically speaking, are the ones who like pop music the most; and I don't know whether pop music has caused this unhappiness, but I do know that they've been listening to the sad songs longer than they've been living the unhappy lives.

Made a couple of swaps. The first and last song. Dropped a couple that didn't really fit, so I'm keeping it at 50 songs.

Uh, because it's fun? Because you want to see the GloNo revival take hold?

No idea. Do you have Spotify installed? Did you click the link? What do you see when you click the link?

Ah, right in line with "50 Ways to Lose Your Lover"

The first song I remember is "Slip Sliding Away", followed shortly after by "Shake Your Booty". It's possible that my young brain locked on to the action verbs of these titles. The first song I remember not liking was "You Light up My Life".

Ok, jonas has a point - Spotify (at least for the Mac) is confusing as hell to set up. Took me forever to get to Jake's playlist - which is pretty sweet, btw. Not quite as sweet as the Ultimate Nez playlist, but still awesome.
