we can all trace it back to all sorts of areas based on different criterias...

run dmc covering aerosmith with "walk this way" and co-staring in the video with them.

the beastie's and rick rubin getting together to make "license to ill".

anthrax putting out the "i'm the man single" and later teaming up with public enemy to make "bring the noise"

faith no more rushing up the charts with "epic".

ll cool j on mtv unplugged.

the rap/rock summit on the "judgement night" soundtrack - faith no more and boo ya tribe, mudhoney and sir mix alot, sonic youth and cypress hill, helmet and house of pain.

hell trace it back to elvis and jerry lee picking up the black vibe in the backwaters of the south if you want to.

as for it having a direct effect of the commercial viability of all top 40 new metal acts over the past several years, absolutely they're to blame. didn't jonathan davis sign just about everyone in his family to a record contract?

"...ever forever, universal, it will sell..."

hell, prophetic shit from chuck d., foretelling all the commercialism of the rap/rock combo, even if it were by chance.

I just had the good fortune to borrow and rip a copy of Def Jam's 10th Anniversary box set. It's full of PE songs, but better yet, PE in a different context than I'm used to. I was amazed at how good all of it sounded, better than I was remembering it.

Chuck D. *was* a prophet. For me, hearing PE was the crucial turning point in my life. I shudder at the thought of who I'd be today without Chuck D.

No shit - Run DMC is 14 and Talking Heads aren't even on the list? That's just idiotic.

I still wonder why the Pixies got left off this list. Good pick on Bob Marley and the Wailers, though....

The only really influential band that I can think of that's missing is the Pixies. I think Run-DMC should have placed even higher than they did.

It's sad that MC5 is missing, but at least they gave us the Stooges, which could justify why the New York Dolls are left off the list too.

Smashing Pumpkins don't need to be on there since they included both Black Sabbath and David Bowie, and everyone knows that Sabbath+Bowie=Pumkins.

Another band that should have been included, of course, is Uncle Tupelo.

All lists like this are worthless attempts to start pissing matches.... so let me unzip.

Where the hell are the Replacements? And I second the glaring omission of Uncle Tupelo.
