Blender ranks the Stones albums....

Postby Dawg » Sat Feb 25, 2006 3:32 pm

So,yeah, I subscribe to and enjoy Blender magazine. One of my favorite features every month is when they review the entire catalogue of a famous band or artist and rank their records from five stars (best) to one (worst).

They started with the Stones this month. Actually, they're doing the Stones in two editions. This month is the 60's and 70's, next month is the 80's to today (now won't THAT be an interesting read?)

As a huge Stones fan, I wanted to see what you good folks thought of their rankings.

Five stars:
Aftermath
Beggar's Banquet (my personal favorite, fwiw)
Sticky Fingers
Exile (Duh)
Some Girls (mild surprise)
Singles Collection: The London Years

Four Stars:
The Rolling Stones, Now!
Out of our Heads
December's Children
Between the Buttons
Flowers
Let it Bleed (surprise to me, usually considered up there with the best)

Three Stars
England's Newest Hitmakers
12x5
Get Yer Ya-yas Out
Goat's Head Soup

Two Stars
Their Satanic Majesty's Request (higher?)
It's Only Rock n' Roll
Black and Blue (thought this would be a little higher)

One Star
Got Live if you Want It
Metamorphosis
Made in the Shade

Any thoughts?

If they switched "Let It Bleed" with "Some Girls," then I'd say Blender got it right. I would also knock "Flowers" down to a three star release. I don't think it was considered a proper album. My understanding was that it was a contract filler release of b-sides, non-album singles, and some leftovers.

Stones

To start, putting a singles collection in is Jive-ass. Aside from that, no way in hell is Some Girls one of their best records.
Between The Buttons (most underrated stones record ever), Englands Newest Hit Makers and Let It Bleed are absolutely at the top of the list. I would probably put 12X5 up there too. The Brian Jones era should not be taken lightly.

I would argue that Some Girls most definitely belongs in the best-of-the-best category. Easily, hands down, belongs up in that pantheon.

The problem with the Stones is that so much of their '60s output is strictly singles-only; "Jumpin' Jack Flash" didn't make it onto LP until Through The Past Darkly (a comp). I still agree that it doesn't belong in this ranking; I think a smarter sidebar would be to rank-order the compilations. Some are better than others...

It just occurred to me that they don't even list Tattoo You. My vote for second most underrated record. Despite being mostly a hodgepodge of leftovers, most of it kicks ass. The last really good RS record really.

Tattoo You came out in 1981.

I'd rank 12x5 with the four-star releases, but that's really my only quibble.
