Cheesy 70's hits with (in hindsight anyway) a creepy vibe? Hoh-kay, this is gonna hurt me worse than it hurts you:

Melanie - "Brand New Key"
Rod Stewart - "Maggie Mae"
Rupert Holmes - "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)"
Tony Orlando & Dawn - "Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Old Oak Tree"
Focus - "Hocus Pocus"
Heart - "Magic Man"
Terry Jacks (had to look that one up) - "Seasons in the Sun"
Looking Glass - "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)"
Sammy Davis, Jr. - "The Candy Man"
Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods - "Billy, Don't Be a Hero"

Years ago I put together a mix CD for a friend called "Songs on Your Mom's Radio." Since I'm (*cough*) a bit older than you guys, the mix looked a little different.

The Association - Cherish, Never My Love
Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 - The Look of Love
Andy Williams - Love Story ("where should I begin?")
Fifth Dimension - Up (Up & Away)
Burt Bacharach - This Guy's in Love (couldn't find that superior Herb Albert version)
Dionne Warwick medley

I'm forgetting some here, but ya get the picture.

Nine years ago, we promised we'd post the full track list. Don't ever let anybody tell you that GLONO doesn't keep its word. Here it is in all its glory.

Have You Never Been Mellow?
70s Creepout

1. Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street
2. Starland Vocal Band - Afternoon Delight
3. Steeler's Wheel - Stuck in the Middle with You
4. America - Ventura Highway
5. Eagles - One of These Nights
6. Rolling Stones - Fool to Cry
7. Jefferson Starship - Miracles
8. 10cc - I'm Not in Love
9. Electric Light Orchestra - Strange Magic
10. Orleans - Dance with Me
11. Al Stewart - Time Passages
12. Olivia Newton-John - Have You Never Been Mellow
13. Bread - If
14. Hall & Oates - Sara Smile
15. Michael Martin Murphy - Wildfire
16. America - Sister Golden Hair
17. George Harrison - My Sweet Lord
18. Badfinger - Day After Day

It's a pretty amazing mix. Even the bad songs fit right in and nail the mood. This mix is an extremely accurate representation of what it was like to be a little kid in the mid-70s, driving around in your parents' car (unbelted, of course), and listening to the radio while you're looking out the windows, dreading school starting back up in the fall.

I have absolutely nothing to add. You've managed to evoke all my childhood summers. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. I learned three things: always get upolstered seats, air conditioning, and an FM radio (yes, it was an option). I think I can still sing all those songs to this day. Jesus, I'm old. Thanks, Jake.

What, no Supertramp?

This also works for remembering what it was like to be a little kid in the 80's, driving around in your parents car (unbelted, mom with a cigarette in her hand) and listening to the radio. Just substitute ELO for a lot of Mike and the Mechanics. George Harrison still works, but more Cloud Nine era. Same effect, though.

Those are all awesome. Don't forget

Beach Baby -- The First Class
Wildfire -- Michael Martin Murphey
Laughter in the Rain -- Neil Sedaka
Fox on the Run -- Sweet
Billy, Don't Be a Hero -- Paper Lace
The Things We Do fro Love -- 10cc
Undercover Angel -- Alan O'Day*
Couldn't Get it Right -- Climax Blues Band

*I used to associate this song with "Charlie's Angels"--which I wouldn't doubt is part of the reason for it's success.
