BUSH ALLOWS GAYS TO BE FIRED FOR BEING GAY
Despite President Bush's pledge that homosexuals "ought to have the same
rights" (1) as all other people, his Administration this week ruled that
homosexuals can now be fired from the federal workforce because of their
sexual orientation.
According to the Federal Times, the president's appointee at the Office of
Special Counsel ruled that federal employees will now "have no recourse if
they are fired or demoted simply for being gay." (2) While the Bush
Administration says it is legally prohibited from firing a person for their
conduct, they have the legal right to fire or demote someone based on their
sexual orientation. To carry out the directive, the White House has begun
removing information from government websites about sexual orientation
discrimination in the workplace. (3)
Not only does the new directive contradict the president's own promise to
treat homosexuals as equals under the law, but it also contradicts what the
Administration told Congress. As noted in a bipartisan letter from four
Senators to the Administration, "During the confirmation process [of the
president's appointee], you assured us that you were committed to protecting
federal employees against unlawful discrimination related to their sexual
orientation." (4)

| How any gay person could support the Republican party is beyond me. If you hold conservative political views and you're gay, consider voting libertarian. At least they don't hate you because you're gay. |

Well, of course he's a uniter... of everyone who thinks EXACTLY the way he is, is willing to sacrifice every single freedom of thought and expression in order to create the society exactly the way Bush's own fundamentalist, religious-based agenda. What's worse, he's giving all Republicans a bad reputation. Even though I'm not GOP, I know that there exist some pretty smart, rational-thinking members of the Republican party. As the most prominent member of his party, he's summarily dragging down their reputation simply by association.
Whatever happened to separation of church and state? Whatever happened to freedom of speech and religion? Why, in this supposedly enlightened day and age, should we even need to scream about these issues? I would have hoped by this point that we would have hashed out at least the consensus to have the right to disagree. Granted, prejudices will probably always exist, but even that "ugly" speech and expression should be protected under our Constitution.
Bush cannot be re-elected. And the non-fundamentalists who give a damn about maintaining their freedoms NEED TO SPEAK UP!!!!!!! We can't afford to let the folks who want to take our freedoms away in a self-righteous fit of faux moralism take them away.
Damn, my undies are in a twist again about this... |

Yeah, there's that whole "could've stopped 9/11" thing that's coming out now too...
I have no problem with intelligent conservatism. The problem with Bush is that he has no grasp of policy details, one way or another. He's all about the big gesture.
Gay marriage got you down? Amend the Constitution!!
You say the government needs to invest in science more? Let's freakin' go to Mars!!
Lost your job? Giant tax cuts will fix that!!
You say Al-Queda is planning an attack in New York? Forget tracking down the terrorists already on US soil, we need a plan to invade Iraq!! |

I think it's funny because what you have here is Bush clamoring for what little fringe of right-wing support he still has. The thing is, he's alienated the people who are conservatives as far as economics (Lou Dobbs is now slamming his economic policies on a daily basis) because he's raised federal spending and caused a huge deficit, while the anti-big government Republicans are seeing he's definitely not one of them, and I've even seen Fox News pundits getting a little nervous about the Iraq/ War on Terror/ 9/11 Investigation situation. So what does he have left? The ultra-radical moral majority conservatives that's who, and he's just going out of his way to appease them.
So be afraid, be very afraid because its only downhill from here. |
