"The Ministry of Special Cases" by Nathan Englander. It's about a couple in Buenos Aires whose son is kidnapped by the police during Argentina's "dirty war." He really gets the relationship between the couple right, and the effect of the loss on their son on them is heartbreaking.

My company just had our anual publisher trade show. I scored the following for free:

Audacity of Hope & Dreams From My Father by Future President Obama
The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill (Stephen Kings lil boy)
various Dora, Curious George, Iron Man & Star Wars books for the kids.

I'm really looking forward to Pillars of the Earth. My Dad has been raving about this book for over a decade. I hope reading the Obamas will add some good karma to his campaign.

Chris Turner's Geography of Hope (enviro non-fic) gave way to Ian Holding's Unfeeling (work-related heavy and depressing fic) which gave way to a 400+ page manuscript (work, non-fic, about animal rights, god help me). So as a result I'm re-reading Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett's Good Omens at night.

Please tell me when book publishing gets sexy and glamorous.

i'm finishing up the dark tower III - the wastelands and then i will let my geekiness run wild and i will read the x-files: i want to believe. i know it's dumb, but i love the x-files and my geekiness/fandom knows very little limits.
