Okay, after many recommendations I listened to this album yesterday: and I was disappointed. Does anyone else think they sound like a monster rip off of The Jam? What's with the hype?

I know...it still sounds like a rip to me to.

I picked up the album cheap in a supermarket a few months ago, and I think it pretty much sucks. Their sound seems to consist mostly of gimmicks and a diluted version of the spiky guitar sound that is (was? I can't keep up) so fashionable. It's really samey.

Yeah, whenever something clever (retro or not) hits the mainstream, mediocre bands like the Futureheads always ruin it. The same thing happened after grunge.
However, I heard the Maximo Park album, and it was considerably better.

I liked it for the first 10-15 listens, because it's bouncy and energetic. And then I started listening to the lyrics, and it was all over. I don't listen to it anymore.

I'm glad I read this thread, because I was a little bit interested in this album. I agree that much of this stuff is just a rip...Bloc Party, Futureheads, Killers...die already.

No, you can think whatever you want, but I love the Futureheads, and I fail to see how they could even be in the same PARAGRAPH as the Killers, whose sole meaning of existence is to have their balls repeatedly licked by Spin magazine. I have a friend who refused to see them with me because he thought they ripped off Gang of Four too much, but fuck, guys, there is nothing new under the sun in music right now, and everything is the new ______, and it's all about how you take the influences that you see or grew up with or whatever and make them your own. Yeah, they sound a bit like some things I've heard before and can't put my finger on but you know what? I DON'T CARE. They give props to Kate Bush, sing about robots and like schoolboys, and consistently make me smile more than anything in the world right now, and that is enough for me. I am so TIRED of this "let's hate on this band because they were on the O.C./Pitchfork liked them/my sixteen year old neighbor was singing along with them this morning" trend that seems to be everywhere right now. Plus, the Futureheads fucking SLAY live, so my friend was wrong.
Also, Tom? You are not allowed to say "get bent" if you are from New Jersey. heh.

By the way, I don't like The Futureheads because of hip backlash. I don't like The Futureheads because I think the album is a tad one-dimensional. Just my opinion.
