Classic, Russ! Between that and Karloff, you're really keeping us in stitches this week.

From all accounts, Frey took his lumps like a man. I, for one, would have loved to see him go off on the Queen of the Modern World, and tell her she's full of shit. For that, he could have earned my respect.

Two of 'em were in kahoots from the beginning I tells ya!
Former crack addict gets to become millionaire.
Dark Crusader gets to portray white man as former crack addict.
Now even more free publicity for both!
It works on so many levels!

it was an entertaining enough book. i read it a while ago (pre-oprah) and found it to be a decent page turner. honestly, i didn't even know it was non-fiction. back then i just thought it was a far fetched story.

the whole thing really just kills me... it's just a book. whether it's fiction or non-fiction... who cares if frey's a liar. it's just a story.

and oprah, she was just managing the spin, protecting her brand. the way the journalists in chicago's paper creamed all over her "bravery" to stand up to frey, it was pathetic. i read one guy that fell out of popular opinion with oprah.... kass. just one writer. that's it.

now, if oprah was a true hero of truth, she'd turn her target on the american political process. oh wait, no, that would actually require a real risk. she may lose her viewer base since she isn't pandering to the middle. boo hoo!

what a non-event this whole frey thing is. what a waste of time.

Vitas you make some good points, except that I disagree with you about the distinctions between fiction and non-fiction.

Our country, be it beleagured and divided currently, was founded on a free press. Works of non-fiction often (and rightly so) fall into the journalistic camp of writing. Liars like Frey undermine the integrity of that so-called free press. Without that integrity (which they are losing more rapidly today than ever before in history - where are the muckrakers of old?), the whole system has the potential to collapse.

Anyway, I do agree that Oprah should take some more risks. Not like she's not rich enough. I'd probably vote for her. ;o)

My special lady brought home the book after hearing about it from The Queen of the Dark Crusaders. I read about 40 pages and gave Frey the benefit of the doubt about the tough guy stuff. I figured he was one of those badass Irish street scrappers like I avoided growing up to save my ass from a beatdown. Why else would all these hard asses back down from him? Then I see him on Larry King and he talks with a lisp and starts every sentence with, "I mean....". Suffering Succotash!
Hope he stays sober for his kid's sake anyway.

The difference between this and other "based on the true story" works of fiction is that Frey sold it from the beginning as an inspirational memoir. And apparently it did inspire a lot of people, based I guess on the premise that if this guy can survive after all THAT, I can certainly get through my tiny little problems.

Only it turns out he didn't really survive a life any different from a million other detoxers. That's why the big stink.

so, what's the difference between "a million little pieces" and the bible? besides one was written first person by the main character in the story and the other is a collection of stories by the disciples of the main character.

they both are inspirational stories that are based on some fact, but are highly exaggerated for affect.

A Million Little Pieces is way more readable, believable, consistent, and historically accurate. Other than that though, they're pretty much the same book.

A-HA!! So now we're trying to deliberately piss off the conservative Christian demographic of GloNo, are we? Silly Jake... while it may be fun to see 'em get worked up into a froth, it's kinda like shooting fish in a barrel.
