There's a certain point in my favorite songs where the music and lyrics sort of peak; the singer delivers the best lines at just the right point in the song. It'll just stick, somehow, and I want to replay it just to hear that part again.

It's that weird, undefinable moment where everything just fits. Probably different for everyone, but these are the parts that do it for me:

Libertines: Can't Stand Me Now

The boy kicked out at the world
The world kicked back a lot fucking harder.

Tom Waits: Clap Hands

They all went to heaven in a little rowboat
Clap hands

The Decemberists: The Sporting

I should've known, he thinks again
I never should have put him in
He turns to load the lemonade away
And breathes in deep the sporting life

Joan Jett: Bad Reputation

Hello, boys!

Eels: Mr. E's Beautiful Blues

My neighbor digs the flavor
Still he's moving to another town
And I don't believe he'll come back (this one line is the key)

White Stripes: Girl You Have No Faith In Medicine

Give me a sugar pill and watch me just rattle down the street

Rolling Stones - Loving Cup

"I am nitty, gritty, and my shirt's all torn, but I would love to spill the beans with you 'til dawn"

For me, this is the exact moment when Exile peaks.

-Off the top of my head, I'd pick the Decemberists' "Sporting Life" too, but for the line: "I'll prove to the crowd I'm that much stronger/ Though I think I might lie here a little longer." It just furthers my suspicion that Morrissey is Colin Meloy's ghostwriter.

-Also, Elvis Costello's "Radio, Radio" right at the last verse (or rant, I should say): "The Radio is in the hands of such a lot of fools trying to anaesthetize the way you feel!" just makes the entire song.

-The Four Tops' "Bernadette", during that pause, and then right when he screams "Bernadette!", that song kicks so much ass I can't even describe it.

-And dare I bring up an obvious Kanye West line: "So he'll keep callin' and tryin', but you stay right girl/ And when he get on, he'll leave your ass for a white girl." That shit just cracks me up.

And, later in the decade, "You're the easiest lay on the White House lawn."

GBV's "motor away" at the line "why don't you just drive away! c'mon!".
and cheap trick's "surrender" with the "rollin' numbers, rock&roll, and got my kiss records out."
both of these songs/moments give me goosebumps...

Oh, that's what they're saying?? I kinda thought that Mick was singing "You're a devious lady on the White House lawn." Although either way, it's not a flattering character sketch, I guess...

I'm such a dweeb, but during Rod's "Every Picture Tells A Story," when he sings "Make the best out of the bad/C'mon laugh it up HA!/You didn't ask to come here anyway." That always makes me smile, but it's getting harder and harder to listen to cool Rod without ton-of-ass Rod intruding on the enjoyment.

You'll have to wait for 2008 for that.

Excellent! GBV has a ton of 'moments' like that to me.

Game Of Pricks

When you come calling me down
I'll put on my disease

The Brides Have Hit Glass

And theres a better road ahead of me
I just don't know how to make it there

---

I could go on and on...good call on 'Surrender', too.
