Fans of lists,
Pitchfork (pitchforkmedia.com) is currently doing a best 100 albums of the 1990s. They're posting 40 today, 40 tomorrow, and 20 on Wednesday. I can't say I agree with all their choices, but it's an interesting and not always obvious read.
Enjoy. |

Scene: Pitchfork staff-room in the swanky new Northside Chicago office
Brent DiCrescenzo: Have you SEEN that best of the 90s list lately?
Ryan Schreiber: I know, I know. I mean Billy Breathes? A jam band?
Brent: And those write-ups! They didn't namedrop a single 18th Century German philosopher!
Ryan: And most of those albums have lyrics on them! IN ENGLISH!!!
Brent: Something must be done! To the Pretension Mobile!

No matter how much I intrinsically agree with you guys and think that Pitchfork is a breeding ground for uptight music critic fungi bent on ridding the world of their own opinions ... I'm still gonna check it out.
I'm a failure as a music geek! |

yeah, now that all of the top 100 are up, it seems that Pitchfork actually went more egalitarian, with OK Computer jacking the top spot from Loveless. But that's the way PF has been going for a while, what with that "We Are the World" nonsense and all.
At this point, I think the most pretentious thing they could have done is go for pop music.
PF to the indie rock masses: Oh, so you like My Bloody Valentine? Yeah... I guess you guys are pretty indie. But 'ya know what? We're so indie, we like Beyonce. |

They did a pretty good job with the top 20. I can't really compla--
Ah, yes, I can. OK Computer? Number ONE?!
I like it too, "Let Down" is sublime, but, I mean, has anyone ever heard a Pink Floyd record? Kid A and Amnesiac (I know I know--not "90s") are much more actualized records. OK has filler on it, for cry-eye! |
