FCC: More Indie on the Radio

January 18, 2007

FCC proposal could end payola probe: "Sources said that radio station groups would be required to set aside a certain amount of airtime for music produced independently. [...] It was unclear how the airtime deal would work and what would qualify as 'independently produced' music, but the sources said that some of the commissioners are concerned about the major labels' ability to dominate the airwaves."

Think there's any chance that this could actually make commecial radio listenable?

I would certainly hope so. Living in the radio wasteland of Northern Michigan is enough to make someone want to drink way too much beer then kill all of the happy furries running around in the woods.

Canadian radio is interesting to listen to as they require a certain percentage of music to be Canadian. Nothing like a Canadian version of every major American act. Good for their industry though.

All I know is that the industry isn't going to do it by themselves, so as a good Democrat I say legislate their asses.

I'm not sure I'd go back even if they started playing songs I would actually like. I'm too into listening to albums in their entirety and/or shuffling my own iPod to have much interest in radio.
