Hall of Shame: Stooges Kept Out

January 8, 2007

R.E.M., Van Halen, Patti Smith, the Ronettes, and Grandmaster Flash were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. "Finalists who didn't make the cut included Chic, the Dave Clark Five and the Stooges."

Okay, people should be embarrassed that the Dave Clark Five were even finalists. Talk about also-rans. Jesus, if they're going to induct every band that tried hard to sound exactly like the Beatles, the Hall of Fame is going to be even more meaningless than it is now. The Dave Clark Five? Come on!

And keep out the Stooges? Lame. Then again, look at all the inductees. Looks like they started scraping the bottom of the barrel around 2000...

why is aerosmith in the hall of fame again?

Aerosmith is in for Toys In The Attic and Rocks. Which is less essential output than the Stooges, who released (arguably) 3 vitally important albums. I'm expecting Diamond Dave to return to Van Halen as a result of their induction. It is bullshit that The Dave Clark 5 is even being considered.
Overlooking The Stooges is....um...Not Right.

It goes without saying that failing to induct the Stooges is a travesty. They are one of the greatest and most influential rock bands of all time. But why bag on the Dave Clark Five? Have you bothered to listen to their stuff? The band had dozens of great singles, some of the best r&r singles of the 60's.

Bob, can you name one Dave Clark song that isn't blatantly derivative of a better, more influential band? Sure, they had catchy songs but so did Paul Anka.

In addition to the Stooges, other shameful Hall of Fame oversites: The MC5 and the New York Dolls. Those three bands are the holy trinity of punk rock. The Ramones got in in 2002 and the Clash made it in 2003, but come on.

Old, but funny nonetheless given the circumstances:
