Ten Songs By Musicians Who Died Too Soon

November 17, 2008

Great topic of debate here at Matadornights: Ten Songs By Musicians Who Died Too Soon. Their list includes:

Elliot Smith “Needle In The Hay” Metallica “(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth” (featuring the late Cliff Burton) Jeff Buckley “Halleluja (live at Sin-e)” Nirvana “Drain You (live in Seattle, WA, October 31, 1991)” Buddy Holly “Everyday” Chris Bell “I Am The Cosmos” Matthew Jay “Please Don’t Send Me Away” AC/DC “Let There Be Rock (Live)” (featuring the late Bon Scott) Joy Division “Love Will Tear Us Apart” Robert Johnson “Sweet Home Chicago”

I would add: John Lennon’s “Cold Turkey,” The Minutemen’s “Cohesion” and Johnny Ace’s “Please Forgive Me.”

What would you add?

Not to be too much of a classic rocker, but it seems like you've got to include something from Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, and Janis Joplin. And Brian Jones.

Also: how about Eazy E, Tupac, and Biggie?

Oh shit, how could I forget Hank Williams?

Remember: rock stars die young because "the years of the wicked shall be shortened" (Proverbs 10:27).

I'd add Bob Marley's "Jamming".

So Karl Rove is living on borrowed time?

School Of Fish, "3 Strange Days" (Josh Clayton-Felt, cancer)
The Clash, "Clampdown" (John Mellor, heart attack)
The Exploding Hearts, "Sleeping Aides and Razorblades" (most of the band, van accident)
The Bar-Kays (mk I), "Soul Finger" (most of band, plane crash in Monona, WI... that plane crash)
Otis Redding, "Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa (Sad Song)"
Booker T. & The MG's, "Hip Hug-Her" (Al Jackson, Jr., murder)

Ooops, two more to make mine an even ten...

Queen, "Tie Your Mother Down" (Freddie, AIDS-related complications)
The Heartbreakers, "Chinese Rocks" (Johnny T, ultimately unknown causes; Jerry Nolan, "natural causes" accelerated by hard living)
