Best Selling Albums of 2009 (So Far)

December 18, 2009

Yahoo Chart Watch's Paul Grein points out that there are still three weeks to go in the calendar year, but these are the top 10 best selling albums (physical and digital combined) since January 1:

1. Taylor Swift, Fearless, 2,694,000 (plus 2,112,000 in 2008)
2. Michael Jackson, Number Ones, 2,227,000 (plus 1,708,000 before)
3. Lady Gaga, The Fame, 1,846,000
4. Susan Boyle, I Dreamed A Dream, 1,803,000 (with just three weeks of sales)
5. Miley Cyrus, Hannah Montana: The Movie, 1,740,000
6. Black Eyed Peas, The E.N.D., 1,554,000
7. Eminem, Relapse, 1,551,000
8. Andrea Bocelli, My Christmas, 1,516,000
9. Jay-Z, The Blueprint 3, 1,393,000
10. Kings Of Leon, Only By The Night, 1,297,000 (plus 311,000 in 2008)

Billboard and Nielsen/SoundScan measure their years differently for their year-end lists: "This year, Billboard's eligibility period ran from Dec. 6, 2008 through Nov. 28, 2009. Nielsen/SoundScan follows the calendar year." Goofy.

Where is Beyonce's I Am... Sasha Fierce?

According to Wikipedia, it has sold 2.6 Million in the US and it was released last November. Could it have sold less than 1.3M in 2009?

The AC/DC album Black Ice sold over 6 million copies. Didn't make the list for some reason...

AndyBoy, the reason Black Ice didn't make the list was that it was released and did most of its sales in 2008 (it was the fifth best selling album of that year with 1.92 million).

And that 6 million figure is for total worldwide sales, whereas Billboard and Nielsen/SoundScan just track U.S. sales.

For what it's worth, Black Ice ranked #31 in 2009, right behind the High School Musical 3 soundtrack.
