Sales: Green Day Doesn't Need Wal-Mart

May 20, 2009

parental-advisory.gifYou won't find Green Day's latest album, 21st Century Breakdown, on the racks at Wal-Mart because "the big box giant declines to stock albums that carry parental advisory stickers" and the band did not release an edited version. But who needs Wal-Mart anyway? Not Green Day, that's for sure. 21st Century Breakdown still managed to sell more than three times as many copies as any other album last week despite the fact that it was released three days later than the others.

1. Green Day - "21st Century Breakdown" - 215,000 (debut)
2. "Hannah Montana: The Movie" soundtrack - 68,000 (down 17%)
3. Cam'Ron - "Crime Pays" - 43,000 (debut)
4. Lady GaGa - "The Fame" - 41,000 (up less than 1%; cume: 850,000)
5. Rascal Flatts - "Unstoppable" - 33,000 (down 44%)
6. Bob Dylan - "Together Through Life" - 31,000 (down 40%)
7. Taylor Swift - "Fearless" - 30,000 (down 25%)
8. Chrisette Michele - "Epiphany" - 29,000 (down 65%)
9. Rick Ross - "Deeper Than Rap" - 26,000 (down 24%)
10. Ciara - "Fantasy Ride" - 26,000 (down 68%)

Debuts further down:

20. Steve Earle - "Townes" - 18,000
76. Phoenix - "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" - 6,000

They may be selling (and more power to them), but they sure did suck on SNL this week. It was crazy boring, crazy derivative, and craziest of all had little to no energy. Suck.

I didn't think they sucked that hard. I'm not running out to buy the album or anything, but it just sounded like regular old Green Day to me. And compared to most SNL music guests, at least the mix didn't sound terrible.

I'll admit that this song reminded me of "Are You Going to San Francisco" though.

I never thought you sucked that hard. Until you contradicted me. Now I have no choice but to systematically destroy your life's work, one step at a time. I'd like to say I had a choice in the matter, but we all saw what you wrote above, so.... prepare for the end.
