Sleater-Kinney vs. Weezer

July 28, 2009

Cat fight! This is awesome. Over on her Monitor Mix blog for NPR, former Sleater-Kinney guitarist (and general badass) Carrie Brownstein succinctly lays down exactly why Weezer has sucked for this entire fucking decade:

I don't know if Weezer hates its fans or just the (apparently) stifling concept of sincerity, but you should listen to these two new songs if you weren't already convinced of Weezer's contempt for music.

Ding ding ding. You can check out the terrible new songs after jump... I couldn't make 20 seconds into either of them.

Previously: O.G. Indie War: Kim Deal vs. Stephen Malkmus (2008).

Comments

A) Why is Rivers not playing guitar?
B) Why is the drummer playing guitar?
C) Why is there some other guy playing drums?
D) Why do these songs suck so fucking bad?

I disagree that this is awesome. Brownstein isn't saying anything we haven't all been saying for a while, it just has the veneer of additional cool because she played in a great band many of us liked.

"Carrie Brownstein" and "badass" do not belong in the same sentence no matter how right she might be about Weezer and its recent suckitude.

Ha ha ha!

I love Carrie. She pulls no punches. And her blog rocks. I handn't been over to Monitor Mix for a few weeks.

I can't get excited about Weezer anymore. Several albums too many. I want to remember Pinkerton and forget about stuff like that stupid song about the playboy mansion or whatever that was.

Hah, good stuff.

If you want another good article that I read about weezer, its on indiepit.com :) its called, "When Weezer Were Cool", haha.

Good stuff guys!

I tend to agree that Weezer's post-Pinkerton output has been disappointing, but this is a relative statement (and Pinkerton set an absurdly high standard for anyone). The bad Weezer albums still tend to have two or three good songs, songs I will still be listening to and enjoying long after I have forgotten about Sleater-Kinney (heck, I already had). Weezer are still making music and selling records, Carrie Brownstein has an "NPR blog". Sounds like sour grapes. More to the point, she doesn't actually explain why she thinks Weezer has sucked this decade. She links to two videos and asserts that the songs suck. That is not an argument. As for these new songs, I can't judge them by this shaky home video, I can barely hear them or the lyrics. I will wait for the album, and wouldn't be surprised if they were both catchy as hell.

Of course it would give me more indie cred to pretend I've hated all Weezer since Pinkerton. And to pretend that I ever actually liked Sleater-Kinney. Well, there goes my indie cred, cuz neither is true.

Wow, an anti-indie-cred post. It's a classic that never dies!

It's a classic that never dies!

Kinda like the indie crie-de-coeur anti-Weezer post, one might say...

Jordan, partial answers to questions A, B, and C: "The 5 piece configuration is working out very well so far, with Josh F[r]eese handling many of the drum duties, freeing up Pat to jump in on guitar and vocals, which frees up Rivers to do his thang, which he is doing quite well."
