Napster Bought by Best Buy: Why?

September 15, 2008

NapsterI guess I do not understand big business. Best Buy To Buy Napster For $121 Million. Why? What the fuck can Napster possibly offer to anybody? The kitty's been dead since 2001. Or shortly thereafter.

Looking at the details, it's obvious that $121 billion is a bit of an exaggeration: "Included in the deal is approximately $67 million in cash and short term investments held by Napster, meaning the net price of the deal would be $54 million, the companies said." Still $54 million dollars? What for? Oh wait: "The companies said the proposed acquisition includes Napster's approximately 700,000 subscribers, its Web-based customer service and mobile capabilities."

700,000 subscribers? Are you kidding me? There are 700,000 people who think think spending $12.95 a month to stream tracks is a good deal? Wow. I guess I do not understand people.

Well, start thinking like a traveller...lots of Aussies, Kiwi, Saffas, etc, turn up in London and the surrounds with no place to stay and little or no money.

Perhaps a sensible option for starters would be to try to find some sort of live-in job in a pub somewhere in the south-east...Gumtree, oops!, things like that might help. Or perhaps look at live-in care positions - from what I have seen they often don't demand experience although I can't claim to know anything about it.

If that doesn't work out, are there any friends somewhere in the south east you can stay with for a week or two whilst you troll around agency after agency trying to find something...aim being to just find something (anything for now) that will pay enough to stay in a hostel briefly whilst looking for a shared place for a short time. Not that it is easy, but persistence should result in something.

Hopefully you find something, and then just stay in a hostel for a while whilst you sort things out - most offer medium/long term stays else find a shared place. Things will be a lot easier to sort out once you are working and living somewhere close-ish to where you want to end up. You might not get something very suitable first, but you have to start somewhere.

Oh, and coaches tend to be a lot cheaper than trains!

That's right. And of course, as well, if you've got a thick roux you don't really need okra as well. And lots of people make it without the okra, anyway.
