Neil Young Hints at Archives Volume 2

July 26, 2010

Homegrown is alright with meFrom a new post on Neil Young's N Y Times, we learn that work on the second volume of the Archives project is well underway. Volume 2 is said to contain "even more content than Volume 1, with many unreleased tracks." Included will be "rebuilt" versions of three unreleased studio albums: Chrome Dreams (1977), Homegrown (1975), and Oceanside-Countryside (???), as well as "Odeon-Budokan live." Before Volume 2 hits the shelves, all four of these albums will be "released in vinyl from analog masters as they originally were created for that format." Interesting...

Chrome Dreams and Homegrown are both fairly well documented with many of their songs trickling out across Zuma, American Stars 'N Bars, Rust Never Sleeps, Hawks & Doves, and Decade. Oceanside-Countryside is rumored to include the pre-overdub versions of material that ended up on Comes a Time.

Odeon-Budokan Live was a live Crazy Horse album produced by David Briggs and Tim Mulligan but never released. These shows from March 1976 in Japan and London were professionally filmed as well. See the complete set lists below...

ARCHIVES TEAM WORKS HARD ON VOLUME 2
July 23, 2010

The NYA team, headed by Will Mitchell and Hannah Johnson, is digging through material supplied by numerous sources, including newspapers, writers, fans, bootleg audio collectors and photographers (special thanks to photographer/collector Joel Bernstein). Much work has been done and there is much left to do. Using the template designed by the late Larry Johnson, the whole team is pushing forward.

Special thanks to audio engineers John Nowland, Tim Mulligan and the team at Redwood Digital for the unbelievable amount of work that has been accomplished so far. Volume 2 promises even more content than Volume 1, with many unreleased tracks.

Four unreleased albums from this period are being rebuilt and will be available in the NYA Special Release Series. Chrome Dreams, Homegrown and Oceanside-Countryside are the three unreleased studio albums. Also from this period is the unreleased Odeon-Budokan live recording produced by David Briggs and Tim Mulligan. These albums initially will be released in vinyl from analog masters as they originally were created for that format. So now is the time to get your new phonograph player. The new players, built with today's technology, are exceptionally good.

This is crazy exciting. But I guess we shouldn't get too excited until we see an official release date. Still, I've been waiting to see an archive release that covers most of the 70s since we first started hearing rumors of archive releases back in the 90s. I've got some grainy bootleg video from the tour dates they mention. Good stuff. Can't wait to get the vinyl of those shows spinning on my refurbished Dual 1209...

We shouldn't get too excited until we're holding it in our hands. Neil has no respect for release dates whatsoever. Remember: Reprise originally confirmed a Fall 2007 release for Volume 1. Then Feb 2008. Then January 27, 2009. Then February 24, 2009. Then June 2, 2009, which he stuck to.

So my prediction is that we won't actually see Volume 2 for two years after they set a release date.

Finally a recent a post on Glono about Neil!! His current solo tour is beyond captivating with him playing mostly solo electric (not a typo - solo electric - no band) and previewing songs that will be on his forthcoming album which is being produced by Daniel Lanois. Yes I slobber over any and all things NY. Sue me. He is the man.

@ Jonathan: I'm bummed he doesn't have any dates in Michigan or close by that work for me. Would love to see him on this tour.

@ Mike - this is truly a show for the die-hards. It's quite a short set hovering right around 90 minutes with no variation throughout the tour - same set every night. And for my third row orchestra seat at the DC show this past May at Constitution Hall, I shelled out around $214 (from Ticketbastard). My wife said "have fun". There's no one on Earth I would spend that much on except Neil. And Bert Jansch opening was amazing.

That being said, what a night. The new songs seem to me like they will fit well with Daniel Lanios' production skills. Neil has always been extremely picky about who he works with as a producer. I know I might be setting my sights too high, but this album just may be a masterpiece.

Mike, I think he's coming to Milwaukee and Minnesota very soon if you want to travel a bit.

Maybe this will be the reason to buy a Blueray player? By the time it comes out they will probably cost $25.

So, when does the reissue of Time Fades Away ever come out on CD?
